Service Academy Information Session

Students interested in attending one of the Military Academies should attend an informational meeting on February 4th at 9:30 at PMHS.  Mary O’Conner from Congressman Pitts’ office will be at Penn Manor HS to talk about the application process and to review the different academies.

 

If your son or daughter is interested in attending this session, please have them stop in the counseling office to sign up or email Mrs Marsh with your interest. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the Service Academies. Students in grades 9-11 should attend!

 

HACC-Financial Aid Night and scholarships

Now that the 2015-2016 FAFSA is available, HACC will be hosting a financial aid night. The Office of Financial Aid of HACC welcomes future college students and parents to join us at any of our five campuses on Thursday, February 19th to learn more about financial options. I have attached a flyer that you could share with your students.

HACC is also very happy to announce that applications for our scholarships will be available starting February 2nd and are due April 3rd. We will be offering over 200 scholarships for the Fall 2015 semester along with a new full tuition scholarship. Students can apply at https://hacc.academicworks.com/.

 

PA Governor’s School for Technology

We just received notice from the PA Governor’s School for Science and Technology that the deadline for application is January 16! This is a four week summer program at Lehigh University. Governor’s Schools are rigorous, selective, and prestigious. If your son/daughter is accepted, the program is FREE! It is a great introduction to college. Many students say it is life-changing to attend a Governor’s School!

The Pennsylvania Governor’s School for Engineering and Technology (PGSE&T) is a four-week summer residential program for talented high school students of science and mathematics. Sponsored by the Team PA Foundation, Pennsylvania Department of Education, PPL and hosted by the P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science at Lehigh University, PGSE&T offers an enrichment experience in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and emphasizes cooperative learning and hands-on laboratory experiences.

The goal of PGSE&T is to encourage young talent to pursue careers in STEM-related fields. The PGSE&T academic program comprises four components:

  • Core courses are selected to provide a glimpse into the grand challenges of modern engineering such as energy, healthcare/bioengineering, cybersecurity, transportation/infrastructure, environment/ sustainability, manufacturing/additive manufacturing, personal electronics, 3D printing, nanotechnology, and military technology.
  • Laboratory courses engage students in hands-on laboratory experiences
  • Team research projects
  • Guest lectures by experts in various STEM-related fields will broaden each student’s awareness of the importance of science and engineering to industrial and societal progress.

PGSE&T faculty are recruited from Lehigh University and other leading regional institutions. The program of formal instruction and team research is conducted entirely at Lehigh University.

Program Description: 
The Health and Biomedical Sciences Summer Camp provides high school students a window into the scientific basis of human health. Through lectures and hands-on laboratory investigations in state-of-the-art laboratories, students will be introduced to the fundamentals of molecular biology, pharmacology, immunology, biochemistry and medical ethics. Students will learn how laboratory science can be translated into improved human health, and they will engage in investigative experiences that will allow them to apply their laboratory skills to real life problems. In addition, students will interact with practicing professionals in fields such as medicine, physical therapy, toxicology, genetic counseling and biomedical laboratory research. The Health and Biomedical Sciences camp will provide a fun, challenging and engaging college environment in which students will develop a deeper understanding of what it means to be a biomedical scientist and health professional.

Students Invited to Apply for the Joint Science Education Project (JSEP)

The Joint Science Education Project (JSEP) is a National Science Foundation
supported science and cultural-exchange summer program for high-school students.
The three-week program takes place entirely in Greenland. Participants from the
United States, Denmark, and Greenland live and work together while exploring
current research and completing their own inquiry-based investigations. The
program includes two weeks of extensive field experiences based out of the town
of Kangerlussuaq and a final week with a visit to Summit Station, the U.S.
research facility located at the top of the Greenland ice sheet. Students
observe scientists as they conduct research in a wide variety of fields
including biology, geology, climatology, chemistry, and engineering. Students
also have significant hands-on experiences in field research under the guidance
of professional teachers from the participating nations.

JSEP is open to U.S. citizens or permanent residents in the 11th grade at the
time of application submittal. Applications from underserved students are
encouraged. NSF’s Division of Polar Programs covers all participant costs, such
as food, transportation, lodging, and instruction for students selected to

2014-2015 Career Seminars

The Penn Manor Counseling Department will be hosting a variety of career seminars throughout the 2014-15 school year.  The goal of these seminars is to expose students to a variety of career options within a specific field.  Representatives from local colleges will also be included in these seminars.  These seminars will run during 2nd block and during homeroom.
